Deborah J. Nedelman, MFA, Ph.D.
I am a published author, an editor, and an Amherst Writers and Artists Affiliate. I have written both fiction and non-fiction, including self-help and textbooks, but fiction is where I find the deepest truths. I have created short stories, poems, plays and a novel.
I have an A.B. from Bryn Mawr College, an MFA in Creative Writing from the Whidbey Writers Workshop of the Northwest Institute for Literary Arts. and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington.
My background as a clinical psychologist informs my writing and makes me an ideally supportive coach. In the workshops I strive to create a safe, supportive environment for participants to explore the scope of emotions and surprising insights that can emerge when we write our personal truths. Yet, these are not group therapy sessions, feedback participants receive is focused on the writing, not on the individual who writes.
Over many years I have participated in a wide variety of writing workshops, groups, retreats, and classes and have found the Amherst Writers and Artists method to be the most rewarding and productive approach to writing. I am eager to share it with you.
There are times in all of our creative experiences where having a fresh perspective on your work or on your idea for a book can be invaluable. For individuals who are have a manuscript in progress or in the idea stage, I offer my services as a book coach to guide and encourage each writer to produce her best work. I can assist you as you work through the developmental stages of structure and form. My background gives me the skills to see ways in which your ideas can be most effectively communicated.

Deborah helps me be brave in my writing by providing a non-judgmental place where I feel safe and welcome. She provides a platform for my work where I feel validated, encouraged and supported to write with my authentic voice. And her writing ... wow.

Deborah has a way of bringing out what is "exciting" about a project. I am so grateful to work with her!
