MY STORY

On my path to becoming a writer I graduated from Bryn Mawr College and the University of Washington. I earned a Ph.D. and worked as a therapist for over 30 years. At Northwest Institute of Literary Arts, I studied fiction and gained an MFA. I married, became a mother, and travelled around the world. All along the way I read and listened to the stories of others, and I wrote stories of all kinds.

In my first career as a clinical psychologist I l saw how stories help us to understand our lives and how, through stories, we build our empathy and compassion for others. I believe more empathy and greater compassion will make the world a better place for all of us.

My passion for story led me to co-author 2 nonfiction books and then to turn from practicing therapy to writing full time. From journals, to blog posts, short stories, poems, and flash memoir pieces, my affair with words has blossomed to a full-time occupation. In 2019 my first novel, What We Take for Truth was published by Adelaide Books.

MY WORK

I began leading writing groups over 20 years ago. Using the Amherst Writers and Artists Method, I create a safe, supportive, and generative environment where writers of all levels and genres can find their voices and their stories.

The experience of writing in one of my groups is magical. Participants dive into the well of imagination together and fuel one another’s creativity. When you write with me, you will surprise yourself and you will leave eager to write more. I use the AWA principals when I work with writers one-on-one as a manuscript coach and mentor.
